The Joyce Center will look vastly different the next time Notre Dame tips off in it, though the Irish now have a chance to add one more decorative touch.
That would be the NIT championship banner available for the hanging after Notre Dame's 77-67 dismissal of Kentucky on Wednesday night, propelling the Irish into a semifinal Tuesday night against Penn State at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Thus this version of the Joyce Center—a rickety bandbox, a 40-year-old urchin—closed by opening an opportunity to soothe the aches of a season gone haywire.
"We've been through a lot, and for us to get back [to New York], we've accomplished something," said Irish guard Kyle McAlarney, who scored 15 points. "The feeling in the locker room, it really is a 180-degree turn from the middle of the season when we were going through that tough stretch.
