Citizens angry at high shrimp prices

Published Date: August 17, 2008

KUWAIT: Several citizens shopping at the local fish market complained about continuing high shrimp prices, even after the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources lifted a ban on fishing for large quantities of shrimp. Citizens at the market on Friday pointed out that the cost of a basket of shrimp had risen to KD 50, saying that the government needs to control the prices of products being sold at the market. One Kuwaiti citizen, Hussein Al-Aradah, described the prices as ludicrous. "Th
e prices at the market need to be organized and dealers should not be greedy. There are many poor families that can't buy shrimp at these type of prices," he said. "The price of shrimp is high due to the lack of surveillance of these dealers by the Kuwait municipality. The dealers are making up their own prices for shrimps; this is illegal and it must stop now," said Othman Bursli, another irate citizen.

MPs wary of bedoon citizenship
KUWAIT: A number of prominent local figures and MPs have expressed concern at the government's move to give bedoons citizenship. They are reportedly worried about the potential far-reaching consequences that they fear may result from this. However, government officials said that the nationality issue should be studied carefully and ensure that those worthy of citizenship are granted their rights. Parties entrusted with the task of safeguarding dossiers should verify the authenticity of individuals' persona
l documents and not be pressured by tribal chiefs or MPs, they said. Officials explained that some MPs are observing a deliberate silence with respect to the citizenship issue because they do not want to be held liable for approving forged documents.

No plans to fire bedoons
KUWAIT: Awqaf and Islamic Affairs minister Hussein Al-Huraiti has stated that the ministry has no plans to dismiss bedoon employees, as has been reported. The minister explained that the ministry's recent step of drawing up a list of bedoon employees was taken in order to assess the total number of these workers employed there, emphasizing that there are no plans to fire them, as was alleged in local media reports. Al-Huraiti added that the ministry will recruit any person who meets its conditions of emp
loyment due to the shortage of Kuwaiti applicants, reported Al-Rai.

WASHINGTON — Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware will be succeeded in the United States Senate by his longtime aide, Edward Kaufman, when Mr. Biden resigns the seat to become vice president.

Delaware’s governor, Ruth Ann Minner, announced Monday that she would name Mr. Kaufman, the senator’s chief of staff for 19 years and a close personal friend, to fill the vacancy through 2010. Mr. Kaufman, 69, said he intended to retire after two years, leaving open the possibility that Senator Biden’s son Beau, the state’s attorney general, could run in 2010.

In remarks made in Wilmington, Del., after his pending appointment was made public, Mr. Kaufman said he wanted “to make clear that I am very comfortable with retiring after two years.”

“I don’t think Delaware’s appointed senator should spend the next two years running for office,” he said.

Aides to Mr. Biden, who said he welcomed the appointment, said he intended to resign in the next 40 to 50 days but an exact date has not been announced. He won re-election to a seventh term in November, running simultaneously with his vice-presidential bid, and would begin that term on Jan. 6.

In his statement, Mr. Biden did not hide the fact that he would like to see his son take the seat, but Beau Biden, 39, said he would not accept an appointment and wanted to fulfill a military obligation with the Delaware Army National Guard in Iraq.

“If he chooses to run for the Senate in the future, he will have to run and win on his own,” the vice president-elect said in his statement, noting that the appointment of Mr. Kaufman would mean a “level playing field” for those who choose to compete for the seat in two years. “The voters will make that decision.”

Both Governor Minner and Senator Biden noted Mr. Kaufman’s deep familiarity with Delaware issues from his experience in the Biden office. “His political views are close to Senator Biden’s, and he doesn’t need any on-the-job training,” the governor said in a statement.

Mr. Biden was first elected to the Senate at age 29 and has been chairman of both the Judiciary and Foreign Relations Committees.
