Published Date: November 24, 2008 KUWAIT: As many as 1,633 young Kuwaiti holders of pre-secondary and secondary certificates have joined military training courses for volunteers this year, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on Saturday. A total of 879 military volunteers have completed courses and been distributed among diverse military sectors, while 590 others are still being trained as soldiers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs), Brigadier Abdel-Latif Buqrees, acting director of the ministry's Conscription and Public Mobilization Directorate, told reporters. The regional political circumstances have nothing to do with the volunteer registration process, he stressed. The ministry has an annual plan to enlist four groups of volunteers per year, holding extra courses in case of a rise in the numbers of volunteers, he added. A new batch of 195 volunteers, including 65 NCOs and 130 soldiers, was registered last Sunday, he added. The Kuwaiti army officer dismissed the suggestion that young Kuwaiti men were less likely to join the army nowadays, citing the involvement of young people on four courses this year as a clear-cut refutation of this idea. Meanwhile, 450 conscripts and 170 non-commissioners officers are set to graduate from the training school in December and January respectively, revealed Colonel Shaia Al-Azemi, the school's head. Volunteers are being trained in using various types of weapons, as well as in field skills and dealing with chemical and biological weapons, and are even attending lectures on engineering and Islamic culture, he added. - KUNA
