BERLIN: Barack Obama on Thursday told a vast crowd of 200,000 people in Berlin that Americans and Europeans must tear down walls between estranged allies, races and faiths, in a soaring challenge to a new political generation. The Democratic White House candidate warned, not far from the footprint of the former Berlin Wall, that humanity must build "a world that stands as one", before a rapt crowd, the biggest of his campaign. The greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another," said Obama, who has scorched through US politics at lightning speed to challenge Republican John McCain for the White House in November's election. "The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand," he said, referring to festering divisions between Europe and the United States opened up by the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. "The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cann ot stand. The walls between races and tribes; natives and immigrants; Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down," Obama said in a speech covered live on German and US television. This refrain echoed former US president Ronald Reagan's call to then Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Berlin in 1987 to "tear down this wall", before the fall of Communism. Obama's speech, before the Victory Column in Berlin's famed Tiergarten park, took the White House race abroad in a way never seen before, and confirmed Obama as a global political phenomenon. It came during a Middle East and Europe tour designed to calm the fears of those Americans who fear he is too inexperienced to be president. But despite crowd chants of Obama's slogan "Yes, we can" and its soaring cadences, the speech was short on specifics, and Obama's foes will likely accuse him of empty rhetoric. McCain took a swipe at his rival, visiting a German sausage restaurant in Ohio, and said he would love to give a speech in Berlin, but only as president. His spokesman Tucker Bounds accused Obama of launching a "premature victory lap". "John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America, Barack Obama spe nt an afternoon talking about it. Obama's impact on US voters will also be closely watched, as huge crowds in Europe are no guarantee of success in US politics at a time when the economy is hurting. A Fox News poll showed Thursday that 51 percent of Americans believe Obama will win the election, with only 27 percent betting on a McCain victory. A month ago, 47 percent of Americans believed that Obama would win the election compared to 32 percent for McCain. In Berlin the crowd was put at more than 200,000 people by Michael Bengsch, media relations officer of Berlin Police. The figure beat Obama's previous record of 75,000 in Oregon earlier this year. The Illinois senator rebuked both his country and Europe for blaming one another for their drift apart, but took pains to insulate himself from critics back home who doubt his patriotism. "I also know how much I love America. I know that for more than two centuries, we have strived, at great cost and great sacrif ice, to form a more perfect union; to seek, with other nations, a more hopeful world. Obama also used Berlin's triumph over division and totalitarianism as a metaphor for the world he hoped to forge. "People of the world - look at Berlin, where a wall came down, a continent came together, and history proved that there is no challenge too great for a world that stands as one," Obama said. In a speech that risked being seen as presumptuous, considering Obama will not even face US voters for another three months, he warned of a world where partnership was not a choice but the only means of sur vival. "We cannot afford to be divided. No one nation, no matter how large or powerful, can defeat such challenges alone," he said. He promised America under his watch would be serious about tackling global warming, a huge concern in Europe and a cause of rifts between the continent and the United States during the Bush administration. But Europe must live up to its side of the bargain, he said, asking for more help in the struggle against Al-Qaeda and the Taleban in Afghanistan. He also demanded more help for Iraqi civilians, for an effort to solve Myanmar's political agony and a new drive for Middle East peace, an attempt to settle t he Darfur crisis and a battle against nuclear proliferation. Obama mentioned Iraq, a war he has opposed from the start, only in passing. But in discussing Afghanistan, he said, "no one welcomes war. ... But my country and yours have a stake in seeing that NATO's first mission beyond Europe's borders is a success." He referred repeatedly to the Berlin airlift, launched by the Allies 60 years ago when the Russians sought to isolate the Western part of the city. If they had succeeded, he said, communism would have marched across Europe. Where the last war had ended, another World War could have easily begun," the presidential candidate said. Now, he said, the enemy is different but the need for an alliance is the same as the world stares down terrorism and the extremism that supports it. "This threat is real and we cannot shrink from our responsibility to combat it," he said. He said Europeans sometimes view America as "part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right. ..." And in America, "there are vo ices that deride and deny the importance of Europe's role in our security and our future. He said both views miss the truth, "that Europeans today are bearing new burdens and taking more responsibility in critical parts of the world; and that just as American bases built in the last century still help to defend the security of this continent, so does our country still sacrifice greatly for freedom around the globe." In any event, he said, there will always be differences. "But the burdens of global citizenship continue to bind us together. A change of leadership in Washington will not lift this burden. In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be required to do more, not less. Obama met earlier in the day with German Chancellor Angela Merkel for a discussion that ranged across the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, climate change, energy issues and more. Knots of bystanders waited along Obama's motorcade route for him to pass. One man yelled out in English, "Yes, we can," the senator's campaign refrain, when he emerged from his car to enter his hotel. Yesterday, Obama met in Paris with the pro-US President Nicolas Sarkozy. His plane, bearing the slogan "Change we can believe in", landed at Le Bourget airport and the Democrat then headed into Paris to be greeted on the steps of the Elysee palace by a smiling Sarkozy. "Bonjour," said Obama, after he was urged by journalists to say something in French and to pose for more handshakes with the French rightwing leader. He gave a joint press conference with Sarkozy before flying to London for the last leg of the tour that has taken him to Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan and Germany. But he was to make no public appearances here, apart from the press conference with Sarkozy at the Elysee, where hundreds of fans waited in the street outside to get a glimpse of the Illinois senator. The US presidential campaign has riveted France, where many are eager for a change from the administration of George W.Bush and where polls mirror those across Europe to show Obama is the candidate most people want to win. But there are few votes for any US presidential candidate in being seen to be close to France. John Kerry, the Democratic nominee in 2004, was pilloried by some conservatives just because he could speak French. Obama "cannot requite the love that France has for him," said Francois Durpaire, the co-author of a book on the senator from Chicago, because "that would go down badly in the Midwest" states of America. But his visit has sparked much excitement in France, with Le Monde newspaper's front-page headline stating: "Europe is under the charm of Barack Obama. Sarkozy's election a year ago greatly improved US-French relations, which were poisoned by France's staunch opposition to the 2003 US invasion of Iraq under then president Jacques Chirac. Sarkozy told yesterday's edition of Le Figaro newspaper that 46-year-old Obama, whom he met once in 2006 in Washington along with McCain, was a "friend". "Unlike my diplomatic advisors I never believed in Hillary Clinton's chances. I always believed that Obama would be nominated," he added. Obama's national security spokeswoman Wendy Morigi said: "President Sarkozy has made the bilateral Franco-American relationship and the transatlantic alliance a centerpiece of his presidency, and Senator Obama looks forward to discussing how to build on these important initiatives." Obama was due to meet in London today with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, opposition Conservative leader David Cameron and former premier Tony Blair, before flying back to the United States. - Agencies
