What began as a small parish church fair for Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Academy has grown into a regional favorite festival that draws crowds in excess of 50,000.

The obvious attraction is, of course, the ubiquitous crab: boiled crab, stuffed crab, crab claws, baked potatoes piled with crab, crab-meat pies and soft-shell crab po-boys.

Volunteers keep busy serving food Saturday at the 24th Annual Crab Festival at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis.

"We purchased five thousand pounds of crab and three thousand pounds of shrimp that will all be cooked by our parishioners," said organizer Pam Metzler. "I've been doing this for 10 years now, and every year I say it's a record crowd. This year is no different."

If crab concoctions don't turn you on, there are dozens of other delicacies that will tweak your taste buds, from the all-American hot dogs and hamburgers, shrimp, crawfish and catfish to seafood lasagna.

The food may be the cause célébre, but for many, it's the one-of-a-kind finds in arts and crafts.

Larry and Gwen McHenry of Slidell have been coming to the Crab Fest to show their handmade cypress lawn furniture for 12 years. "We go to a few other fairs and such, but we're always here for the Fourth," Gwen said.

Whatever your passion, be it food, music, arts, crafts, rides or mingling about - you can find it all at the Crab Fest in the Bay.

"It's the best on the Coast," Metzler says. "There's nothing else like it."
