Newsflash

Kuwaiti Minister of Communications Abdulrahman Al-Ghunaim on Monday announced the launch of the first stage of the fifth phone numbering system.
All National Mobile Telecommunications (Wataniya) and Zain numbers will soon have eight, rather than the current seven, digits, the minister told reporters.

The Ministry of Communications (MoC) has taken all the necessary precautionary measures to ensure continuing phone services during the implementation of the new fifth phone numbering system, he said. The first stage begins with the addition of the number nine to Zain's mobile phone lines and six to Wataniya's, the minister noted.

The number two will be affixed to fixed phone lines and number one to extension lines that begin with the number eight, he said. The move aims to improve mobile and fixed phones services and to boost the competitive edge of local communication companies, thus leading to higher-quality but cheaper prices, the minister added.

Hisham Akbar, the chairman of the company running the project, said that subscribers' privacy was taken into account while implementing the new phone numbering project. He hailed the plan as a necessary move to keep abreast of the current stupendous developments around the globe.
