US had knowledge that NSG meet would fail: CPI

25 Aug 2008, 1807 hrs IST,PTI

MUMBAI: The Communist Party of India on Monday accused the US of being responsible for the "failure" of the recent NSG meeting in Vienna to give India a waiver for global nuclear commerce saying "small countries raising objections could not have been without the knowledge of" Washington.

"Small countries raised objections and it was not without the knowledge of the US," CPI general secretary A B Bardhan reporters here.

"Most of the objections were raised on the clauses of the Hyde Act, like continuous fuel supply to India. As a result, India won't get clean and unconditional waiver which the government has been claiming so far", he said.

Bardhan said the UPA government has "more trust" in the US. "The UPA government says the US will use its clout to get a clean waiver but this has not happened at Vienna", he said.

The CPI leader expressed the fear that the US would force India to accept the amendments suggested at the NSG meet.

The government moved ahead with Indo-US nuclear deal without keeping any option, adding Left parties will continue to oppose the government on the deal.

Bardhan said the ongoing agitation launched by the Left against the deal was in its third phase. The first was opposing the deal, the second withdrawal of support to the UPA government, he added.

"We are also agitating on issues like inflation, agrarian crisis and against communal forces," he said.
